Our North Berwick colleague, Alicia McLean, loves living in Dunbar, Scotland’s first Zero Waste town.

Moving from another part of the County, over 18 years ago, to Dunbar in order to bring up her children, she has fallen in love with the community spirit and family friendly environment.

Dunbar, located only 25 minutes by train from Edinburgh, is a beautiful seaside town popular with all ages and we can see why.  The town boasts excellent schools and nurseries, an abundance of leisure activities including golf courses, tennis courts and a sports centre with swimming pool and there are many clubs and groups too ideal for keeping everyone fit and active.

The bustling high street is full of independent shops and businesses and there are many fine restaurants and bars to suit ever taste and budget.  The sweeping sandy beaches, lovely walks (including the John Muir Way) and two working harbours add to the charm of the town and with the train line and A1 linking the north and south it has everything you could ever need.

Dunbar also has another important factor when it comes to the environment and the impact we all play to protect it for their children and future generations.  Not only is it a lovely place to live it is also Scotland’s first Zero Waste town.  A community development trust, Sustaining Dunbar, was launched in 2008 and has developed lots of projects to help people reduce home energy consumption, walk and cycle more and grow more of their own food. Working to reduce waste to landfill and maximise the benefits of re-use and recycling within the town which, in turn, increases the community self-sufficiency and reduce emissions.
