Our History

What's like us? Traditional and modern - the ideal mix

Long-established does not need to mean old-fashioned.  In the case of Simpson & Marwick, despite being founded in 1886, we are a progressive and innovative legal business in what is often seen as a very conventional sector. Constantly evolving, our time-line makes for interesting reading:

1886-1980s
1886-1980s

The firm operated out of 18 Heriot Row, Edinburgh, concentrating on litigation and latterly adding residential property. Heavily involved in both the Piper Alpha enquiry and the Lockerbie bombing, the firm developed a powerful reputation for its professional approach and strong ethics.

1980s-2015

Simpson & Marwick grew its position as the pre-eminent solicitor estate agency in Edinburgh and East Lothian holding onto first place throughout the latter years in terms of value of properties sold. The firm was represented on the Board of Edinburgh Solicitors Property Centre (ESPC) working hard to promote solicitor estate agencies as the Scottish way of selling a home.

2015-2020

In 2015 Simpson & Marwick merged with global law firm Clyde & Co. The merger presented insurance company clients access to an even broader service offering and global coverage for those operating overseas. The merged firm was renamed Clyde & Co except for the residential property division which continued to trade under the Simpson & Marwick name. Simpson & Marwick also continued to strengthen its position as the go-to solicitor estate agency in East Scotland.

Moray Legal is also home to Moray Group’s other legal brands of Esson & Aberdein and Alston Law. Moray Financial Limited also trades as Simpson & Marwick when it comes to Mortgages, General Insurances and Protections.
